Biography
Maja Bannerman is a writer, singer and performing artist based in St. Catharines. She has received several art council grants to create plays, spoken word performances and songs. She has toured across Canada presenting original shows in a variety of venues and at festivals. For 20 years Bannerman ran Parasol Lane Productions a company that specialized in historically- based performances featuring the Niagara region.

Maja currently performs with musician/producer Rusty McCarthy. Their shows are part cabaret, part kitchen party and include original songs, poems and sketches. Her first CD of original songs, Signs of Life, was released in 2017. In January 2023 Rusty and Maja launched their first recording as a duo and are continuing to perform live and to present online Variety Shows.

Bannerman is a poet, singer-songwriter and performing artist. She has travelled across Canada performing her poetry in galleries, libraries, community centres and classrooms. Bannerman's visits have included theatre arts, music, creative writing and media high school classes.

Classroom Approach:

Using pre-recorded soundscapes/ music, pictures, anecdotes and samples of her own work, Bannerman discusses and demonstrates how these devices can be used to stimulate the writing process. Students are also encouraged to look at their own lives and to translate their personal experiences into poetry. Sessions can also include time for students to write and read their work using sounds/music and pictures to encourage the use of the imagination.
